Mario Maker 2 SMW Water Brick Tileset

Postby Lithobraker » Tue Jun 30, 2020 4:27 pm

One day, while working on my first episode, I took a look at the Mario Maker 2 semisolid sizables and thought, "You know, those would make a great tileset." So using some of their graphics, I've created just that!
This tileset does not come with any vanilla SMM2 blocks, sizables or BGOs- you'll have to get those elsewhere- but it's intended to fit in with them.

Update: Improved the look of the sloped tiles. If you want the old version, the Google Drive link has it.

Neat! I think the slopes would look better if they were more slope-like and less stairs-like on the underside, though.
Ideas are useless if you can't make them real.

I kinda thought so too, but I ran into some issues. When I get home, I'll try a different approach.

If you're struggling with making slopes, what I tend to do is take the regular top section twice and repeatedly move a shrinking selection box (red) up by 1 pixel. Afterwards, minor corrections can be done to the shading. Here's an untextured example, to illustrate the method.

Once the top segment is sloped, the area below the slope can be magic-wand-tooled to get a selection shape with which to copy the tileset fill from elsewhere on the sheet. Afterwards, more minor shading corrections can be made.
Here's an actual example of a result from this method: https://i.imgur.com/peKSnUy.png

I'm afraid your explanation of what to do is kind of lost on me; I have no idea what that means and the images don't help.
Part of why I made them this way was to mimic the way castle slopes look. They've got a similar sort of 'flattened staircase' look, with bricks sticking down into the rest of the sprite.
I'm going to just try rotating the brick top and see if I can change it into something that works with only one slope corner block.

Added in 25 minutes 28 seconds:
Well, I think I got them looking much better. I pretty much just took the normal 'top brick' sprite and rotated it 45 degrees, and reshaded it.
Getting everything to line up wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be.

Oops, sorry! I hope this explains it better. I found this to be the fastest way to make slopes that are easy to make look good:

(Program: Paint.NET though anything beyond MSPaint ought to have box selection and magic wand)

The slopes youve made look nice. I think this may just save a few headaches on tiles with more complex textures.

Ahhh, okay. Now it makes sense! Yeah, that does seem like a good idea.
