Honestly, I don't even think about it anymore, I guess like most things it just comes from practice. One thing I used to do, was draw something like say a "sun" on the same sheet that you're drawing the tileset on. This "sun" basically is a guide to show which direction the lighting is coming from. As a reference, it makes shading easier to do and makes it look a little more realistic. Give it time and you'll get the hang of it, whatever method you find easiest to work with. The most important thing is to make mistakes and experiment. You do that, you'll grow accustom to trying different styles etc and of course learn what does and doesn't look good in the process. ;)

Dang, Squishy, you and a lot of other people make shading look so... EASY in tilesets and sprites. How are you and them able to do it? I kinda suck at shading...
I guess I'm 1 of the lots of others making shading on tiles & sprites easy... I'm still kinda learning Sega Genesis & SNES style sprites & tiles tbh. :|

honestly you should probably post some work before making such claims, considering ur deviantart only has like 3 nes recolors

Yeah, it looks more like the walls of Peach's Castle in SM64. Though if that was the intention it's a pretty good background.

Holy shit that was I was thinking! But, I'm kinda lazy right now. I can update it a little more depends on my mood.
The hills on the previous one, I don't know I was kinda lazy. But then I've decided to remake it. Also the nails on the blocks because too big. The background has even evening and night! Just like Sednaiur's. I don't know if I should change the sky where it goes from light to a more darker calm blue.

If you haven't already, split the background up into seperate layers and collect them on a spritesheet, so that people who use parallaxing don't have to re-draw half of your background.
Ideas are useless if you can't make them real.

I have experienced in making paralax backgrounds. I guess I could try to spit it into layers.

If you look, it has the red burn marks to show lava comes up to. ...or what has been Burt by lava. When you have lava on the walls and ceiling, then you would be unable to use them.
