TPP gone. For now.

Postby mechamind » Fri Jan 22, 2016 11:48 am

EDIT: The Trans-Pacific Partnership is now dying due to action from the United States. Make sure it is gone for good.

* * * * * * * *

- - - Original post - - -

It has been four long years that many have had to worry about the infamous Trans-Pacific Partnership. Among the many problems with it, as those on the internet may already know by now, it means severe copyright restrictions that cripple the ability to share or even create content. And now it's too late to rewrite any part of the treaty.

February 4 is near, so the big decision is coming. Have the poilitical powers finally decided that TPP goes too far?

Only time will tell. We can only really hope that it'll get cancelled.

Unfortunately, the current Canadian trade minister is leaning towards a yes on the TPP. However, it is still possible to change their mind even with just under one and a half weeks left.

It seems that Japan's TPP negotiator has been accused of accepting a bribe? I've never heard of the site, but I wouldn't be surprised if this was true.

It's the last day before the big decision of whether the TPP is signed. Since it's being done in New Zealand, the decisions could be made within the next 24 hours.

I do hope that the resignation of Japan's negotiator has turned at least a few leaders against the TPP.

The bad news...the TPP has just been signed. That now means there's only one last chance to repair the damage before it's too late, and the treaty must not be ratified. But as far as we're concerned, our defenses are down.

Here are some things though:
* Just by signing, several trade ministers have now exposed themselves for their disregard.
* In a violation of civil liberties, New Zealand police have apparently been knocking the doors of "known activists" who are against the TPP.
* The guitarist of Rage Against the Machine did agree to try and bring even more recognition to activists against TPP. But in my opinion, that's not enough, since Rage was an obvious one. Other artists need to follow suit, as based on ACTA precedent, TPP will only benefit the labels and not the artists.

I'm hoping to see more groups speak out and rat out those who signed (now that it's been signed, I'm calling out Canada's Chrystia Freeland, perhaps the least appropriate surname for this situation). Things have just gone to extremes.

EDIT: At the time of this edit, the New Zealand Herald says that central Auckland roadways are blocked by the protests. Well, those who signed had it coming.

This is not something a simple petition can resolve.

What's really stupid is that the Canada and U.S. governments only said they'd sign but not necessarily ratify. This could probably slide if not for the bribery allegations from Japan. Even if you're not aware of the internet's disgust over this, the treaty should have been held off for at least a year if not scrapped entirely.

And yet, it was still signed at the original date despite bribery allegations. There's no excuse for this, and there has to be a way to rule the signing as illegal.

I think the White House will need to maintain an anti-TPP position for at least the next 7 years (or however long the treaty lasts plus two additional years due to the GDP requirement). The approval is based on the amount of GDP, not the number of countries that signed except for the first two years. They need approval equal to 85% of total GDP among the 12 countries, or the TPP won't be ratified.

That's why it's important to keep Canada and the U.S. out of the deal. Unfortunately, I expect governments of Japan and Australia to say yes.

Still 7 years. Those are the same two years that I'm talking about with the GDP requirement and the number of countries.

If the treaty has a 10-year minimum, then we may have to wait 12 years.

I'm not sure how long they planned it to last, but I think they wanted to maximize its duration. The treaty was planned maliciously, because they both released the text and held the signing where nobody would think about (New Zealand), And of course, there is the chance that bribery was involved, plus recent violations of civil liberties in their attempts to target the protesters.

In connection to the TPP signing, one woman recently threw a sex toy in the face of New Zealand minister Steven "Baggins" Joyce. "That's for raping our country and the TPPA and our rights and freedoms. I did it for our country." I had to look up another article, but it is confirmed that she did it because of TPP.

The TPP has been buried. At least for now (I'm still waiting to see what happens between now and January). Although Japan rammed it through, the U.S. is planning to reject it. These two countries were absolutely required for ratification, but it looks like that's not going to happen. Even just leaving TPP on the table would mean that it fails.

Even if TPP is gone for sure, there will still be other ways that special interests try to pass absurd laws to restrict internet freedom. But this is a good start.

Now there's an ongoing battle over who takes credit for killing the TPP. But I'm just going to focus on the internet and copyright, as that's what would affect the gaming community.

Donald Trump was going to get rid of the TPP. I'm pretty sure he's the one, even if he hasn't taken office yet.
