Creating your own Backgrounds

Postby Sky-Streamer » Thu Oct 24, 2019 6:26 pm

I'm about to create my first custom background; It's going to be a sunset, overlooking an ocean shore. Can you please answer these questions?

- How do I import backgrounds into SMBX?
- What dimensions do I need to properly let the sprite flesh with the background?
- Do I need to make the background able to loop as you move horizontally?
- If this type of background already exists, can you please show it to me?

Thank you! :D

- make sure your background's name matches the name of the background you want to replace in the graphics folder. then either place your own in the level or episode folder
- 800x600 pixels are the minimum dimensions for most backgrounds. avoid odd numbers for width and height.
- most backgrounds loop horizontally by default, so it's not a bad idea
- since most backgrounds loop, i'm not aware of many backgrounds that include the sun or moon in the background, as that element would also loop. so no.
Ideas are useless if you can't make them real.

also be aware that level backgrounds are referred as "background2". The ordinary "background" folder contains simple background objects like trees, bushes, water areas ..., they are simply referred as "BGO" inside the SMBX2 editor and also within the community

Still using the legacy editor? Get SMBX2 and PGE, it will improve your experience significantly. Here's why. And remember, Yoshis are tools to be used and discarded.

On the final point of what Enjl stated
It might work if you use parallax to put the sun over the top of the background, and set the movement speed to something low so it looks like it's moving slightly as you move across the level
Otherwise you could replace a background that doesn't loop (not sure which ones don't).

It is given that x = 5. What is the value of y?

I made this ages ago, though it has a incorrect size and currently is one the fixing list.
